the cost of change

a lot of our client are folks looking for a way to break out behavior cycles that are cycle of diminishing returns.

we talk to clients all the time about re-thinking their approach… not in huge ways… just logical ways…

but a lot of these institutions with established revenue streams are massively resistant to change even if the face of overwhelming negative finical returns…

they want someone to give them an answer that’s anything but actually “change”.

with that, we give you the riaa.

over the past 3 year period, they spent around $64,000,000 in legal and investigative expenses to recover around $1,361,000.

so of the 10’s of millions they spent suing file sharers during the period, they got 2% back.

all the while they are seeing less and less profit coming in the front door because of an over dependence on physical media sales.

as we say to most of these clients “you are getting the outcome you have designed for”.

if you want different outcomes, design different solutions…

and yes, these solutions may require you “change” the way you operate.

in other words, we think the riaa could do to generate new revenue streams (and beat a 2% return) with a $64 million r&d budget.

UPDATE:

we repeat, a lot of companies want someone to tell them to do anything but change… and the riaa is again leading the way
